“Heaven” – A Dreamy Abstract Commission for a Modern Entrance Hall Home
One of the most rewarding aspects of being an abstract painter is creating bespoke artworks that are deeply personal and tailored to a specific space. Recently, I had the pleasure of working with David and Isabelle on a large-scale commission designed to transform the entrance and night hall of their home in Waterloo, Belgium.
The couple wanted something unique for a very special area of their house - a vast open staircase that leads to the bedrooms. As you walk up the stairs, a massive window opens onto their “home heaven”: the garden and a breathtaking view. It felt only natural to translate that magical daily ritual - climbing the staircase toward light, dreams, beauty and softness - into an artwork.

The Concept: “Heaven”
I decided to name the commission “Heaven”, as a direct reference to that uplifting experience. It became a metaphorical “stairway to heaven” - a passage from the rhythm of the day toward the serenity of the night. It was also about the joy of returning home to a peaceful sanctuary, where dreams meet reality - and of course, a nice reminder of the famous Led Zeppelin song 'Stairway to Heaven'.
The Process: Tailored Dimensions & Design
Because the piece was custom-made for the space, we worked with very specific dimensions: 155 x 120 cm, perfectly proportioned to enhance the hall without overwhelming it. This is one of the beautiful aspects of commissioning an artwork: it’s designed not just as a painting, but as an integral part of the architecture, interior design and energy of the home.
The Palette: Dreamy Blues & Golden Dust
For “Heaven,” we explored a dreamy, ethereal palette:

-
Soft and deep blues to echo the sky and the feeling of ascending toward dreams
-
Gentle touches of white and pale pink, bringing softness and lightness, reminding us of the softness of the clouds
-
A whisper of golden dust, adding warmth, glow, subtle luxury and magic
The final result is a fluid, calming atmosphere that resonates throughout the entrance and staircase, setting the tone for the rest of the home.
Why Commissioned Art Matters
What makes a commission so special is that it tells the story of the people who live with it. For David and Isabelle, “Heaven” is not only a painting - it’s a daily reminder of beauty, peace, and dreams. It reflects their personalities, their space, and their vision of home as a sanctuary.
✨ If you are considering an artwork that is tailor-made for your home or office, I would be delighted to create something unique for you. A commissioned artwork is more than simple decoration - it’s a piece of your story, translated into colour, texture, and emotion.
